BBC News published a heart-breaking piece just before Christmas about what has become of Romania’s orphans. You may remember reports from the early 1990s detailing the horrific orphanage conditions there. (Deal and his family can attest to this first-hand, from the experience of adopting their son.)
Tragically, most of the children from that period went unadopted and have languished in institutions ever since, with little care and stimulation. They’re now adults… but years of mistreatment and isolation has left them damaged.
The BBC video report and article here give a glimpse into the human rights violations still happening in the former communist country, as well as proof of what happens to human beings when they’re deprived of a caring family and community.
