Racing Canada to Tyranny

I imagine the majority of readers here at Crisis are from the great nation a couple hours south of my hometown. As a Canadian I grew up in a culture that was heavily influenced by all the good—and the bad—that comes from my southern neighbor, and I have great affection for the USA. But there is an ugly character trait that many Canadians revel in—namely, anti-Americanism. 

I recall a class during my undergraduate degree about Canadian history since the Second World War. In a rare turn of events, I actually had a professor from the Social Sciences Department who was not a Marxist, Leftist, history-hating radical; he was a true patriot and loved our country. In any case, it was a typical campus setting for a major Canadian university, the seats filled with an array of students from all over the country. Many of them were immigrants or the children of immigrants (like myself), and many were international students. At the onset of the first class, the professor asked us to define what it meant to be a “Canadian.” Sadly, no one really had a sufficient answer. We have been so effectively brainwashed here that most Canadians will blabber about hockey or diversity as being the markers of what constitutes a Canadian. I love hockey and a variety of ethnic restaurants as much as the next Canuck, but there must be more to our identity than that. 

The professor then said, “Raise your hand if you think being Canadian means not being American.” Most of the class chuckled and raised their hands. Well, needless to say, Canada in some ways had an inferiority complex with regard to the USA, and that has not changed. But now, I might say that one of the only things we have been truly superior to our American brethren—besides proper English spelling—is becoming more equitable in distribution with our Yankee friends. I am speaking of Marxist tyranny. If there is one thing at which we Canadians have been better than America over the last five decades, it is selling ourselves out to globalist morons who wish to leech off our resources and erase our cultural patrimony.

A lot of American commentators lament the redefinition of marriage; meanwhile, that is old news to us Northern Marxists, as we have long since destroyed marriage with a sweeping legal change almost 16 years ago. Catholic Americans regret the changes to Catholic schools in the U.S., but again, many of our provinces have already held referendums to get rid of parochial systems. And in provinces with significant Catholic school boards, they are funded by public money and forced to accept the dogma of political correctness, even in religion class. We have some of the strictest gun laws in the West, and this summer there was an attempt by our Comrade-in-Chief to take away the vast majority of non–hunting-related guns from Canadians. Our COVID-19 lockdowns would make Gavin Newsom blush, and our abortion laws have long tickled the devil pink. 

Strangely, we do still have freedom to homeschool, and they have not taken away our ability (except under lockdown pretenses) to practice our faith openly. Now, I fully expect that as America continues to decline on the progressive path toward Marxist tyranny, our overlords in Trudopia will find sufficient motivation to get ahead of the Alinskyites to cement their place as lords of North American Communism.

All sarcasm aside, my country has a significant number of patriots, and we look upon American patriots with admiration. Our countries may have differences, but as Catholics, we can unite around the virtue of true love of country during these dark times. After the chaos of the recent American presidential election and its aftermath, it’s clear a fight of epic proportions is being waged. The gloves are off and the principalities and dominions are involved in warfare. We would faint if we could see it for what it truly is.

It is a time of good versus evil, light versus darkness, and the anti-Church versus the Church of Christ. In his recent interview with Steve Bannon, Archbishop Viganò said: “Each one of us has a role that Providence has entrusted to us, and which it would be culpable to shrink from. If the United States misses this opportunity, now, it will be wiped out from history. If it allows the idea to spread among the masses that the electoral choice of the citizens—the first expression of democracy—can be manipulated and thwarted, it will be complicit in the fraud, and will certainly deserve the execration of the entire world, which looks to America as a nation which has fought for and defended its freedom.”

As someone who has lived on the outside looking in for my whole life, I understand what the good bishop is saying: America is an example for the rest of the world, no matter how flawed. If the USA falls and becomes a complete and subservient tool of the globalists, then she will have much more in common with Canada than I would ever have believed. I do hope and pray for my American friends, and may God protect what is good about your nation in the tumultuous times to come.
