Dominican Sisters of Mary to Purchase John Paul II Cultural Center

Earlier this evening, Mother Assumpta Long announced the intention of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, the Mother of the Eucharist to purchase the John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, DC.

The Dominican Sisters hope to make the John Paul II Center into a House of Studies for their order.

I spoke with Mother Assumpta about this purchase at their annual golf outing in Northern Virginia, and later in the day received the following statement via email:

Mr. Hudson,

On behalf of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, I want to share this announcement:

The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, has signed a purchase and sale agreement to buy the 3900 Harewood Road property in Washington, D.C., to be used as a House of Studies for the continuing education and formation of our Sisters.  We are still in the inspection phase of this agreement.

We believe that the ultimate acquisition of this building, currently housing the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, represents an opportunity that is aligned with the visions of our community, Pope John Paul II, and the Archdiocese of Detroit. It is a wonderful way to build upon the intention of the Center to bring the message of His Holiness to contemporary culture and promote vocations, and it provides yet another connection to his influence in our community and the incredibly generous donors to all these venerable institutions.

As we continue the due diligence of the facility, we do so in prayer and discernment as we seek God’s will in our Community and our lives.

I applaud this bold move by Mother Assumpta and her Dominicans — the John Paul II Cultural Center has been floundering for many years, and the presence of a House of Studies for their burgeoning community of sisters is a wonderful use of that space and property.
