The Olympics thus far…

This is one of the loveliest photos I’ve ever seen: Miriam, the sister of the late Georgian Luge athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili, in her home town this weekend during his funeral. The picture perfectly captures a sister’s grief. Heart-breaking.

In spite of the Olympics’ tragic start, I have found the games exciting thus far. As much as I wish my home nation of Canada were sweeping the medals, I must give credit to my adopted country; the United States is doing incredibly well. I’m sure my Canadian family is wearing black today to mourn their hockey game loss to the U.S. last night. This is the first time American men have defeated Canada in hockey since 1960. Sorry, my fellow Canucks!

One of my sisters was able to attend the ski jump event on Saturday and said that if it looks like the athletes are skiing fast on television, try watching it in person. “Scary” was her word. She also said Whistler Village is fabulous.

I can’t seem to forget Shaun White’s super-human halfpipe feat last week. I enjoyed watching the Norwegian Askel Lund Svindal take the Men’s Super G after overcoming his serious accident in 1997. Then there was American Evan Lysacek beating Russia’s Evgeny Pluskenko, much to Plushenko’s chagrin. Even President Putin got into it.

Of course, I can’t forget Lindsey Vonn’s gold and her subsequent wipe out, along with Julia Mancuso’s consistency. And does anyone know where we got a sport where you cross country ski, and then target shoot?

What about you? Any favorite moments?
