Pope Francis

Pope Francis is the 266th and current pope of the Catholic Church, Bishop of Rome and Sovereign of Vatican City. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio (b. December 17, 1936) in Buenos Aires, he was ordained a priest in 1969 and served as Argentina’s provincial superior of the Society of Jesus from 1973 to 1979. He became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and created a cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II. He was elected pope on March 13, 2013.
