What is Cardinal Dolan Up To?

What is Cardinal Dolan up to? According to reports, Dolan has extended an invitation to President Obama to the annual Al Smith dinner in New York City. The president, reportedly, has accepted.

Historically, the dinner is one of the most prestigious political events in New York City particularly during a presidential election year and candidates from both parties usually attend.

Known for its lighthearted political speeches, the major speakers deliver a series of self-deprecating jokes while ribbing their opponent at the same time. In October 2008, Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama both attended the dinner, accepting an invitation by Cardinal Egan of New York. During the dinner, Cardinal Eagan expressed his “delight” that Obama and McCain had attended, called them “outstanding exemplary Americans.”

But this year, some Catholics are surprised to hear that Archbishop Dolan had invited Obama, now that he is president. Should the Archbishop associate a fundraiser for Catholic Charities with a leader whose administration remains defiantly opposed to Church moral teachings?

It’s not unprecedented in a presidential election year for a candidate not to be invited. In 1996, Cardinal O’Connor did not invite President Clinton or Senator Dole to the dinner and, in 2004, neither Sen. John Kerry nor President Bush were invited.

Obama’s attendance at the dinner this year could be awkward, particularly since the Catholic Church’s relationship with Obama has been severely tested in the battle over his administration’s contraception coverage mandate issued by the Department of Health and Human Services.

According to Dolan, Obama assured that his administration would not “impede” the work of the Catholic Church. But once the mandate was issued, Catholic bishops publicly denounced the move, calling it a threat to religious freedom.  What’s worse, administration officials who met with the bishops about the mandate refused to compromise in any meaningful way.

Dolan spoke out against the mandate, but was charitable when publicly speaking about Obama’s motives.

“I think I believe him when he says that he highly regards the work of the Church and does not want his administration to impede any of that,” Dolan said about the President on CBS during the controversy.

But Dolan insisted that the mandate is “straightjacketing,” “handcuffing” and “strangling” the Church and suggested that the members of Obama’s administration were either insensitive or ignorant of their concerns.

The Archdiocese of New York joined the University of Notre Dame and over 40 other religious organizations filing suit against the Obama administration to block the mandate.  After announcing the lawsuit, Dolan issued a statement declaring that the issue was now up to the courts.

“We have tried negotiation with the administration and legislation with the Congress—and will keep at it—and there’s still no fix,” he stated. “Time is running out, and our precious ministries and fundamental rights hang in the balance, so we have to resort to the courts now.”

Additionally, Obama has further dismayed faithful Catholics after he expressed his support of same-sex marriage. Obama has also refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court.

In spite of their differences, Dolan appears willing to extend an olive branch to the president. Perhaps in this case, Dolan is conceding the political battle to be charitable and out of respect of the tradition of the dinner. The dinner raises millions for Catholic Charities each year and often serves as a symbol of bi-partisanship right before the presidential election.

Already, some Catholics are grumbling that the Archbishop’s public association with Obama may suggest a reluctance to oppose the president’s policies on abortion or religious freedom.

It has not been confirmed whether or not Republican candidate Mitt Romney has been invited, but presumably he will don a white tie and exchange jokes with the president and some of the wealthiest American citizens in New York City.

Dolan will also be given the opportunity to address both candidates in the national spotlight. While it is unlikely he will be able to change the president’s mind on these issues, he might see the dinner as an opportunity to defend religious liberty before the American public.

Hopefully the irony of Obama’s relationship with the Catholic Church will not be lost in the humorous tone of the event. It certainly won’t be lost on the media, who will frame it in the most dramatic terms.

Dolan is known for his sense of humor, which often characterizes his public remarks.

“What weighs on me the most,” Dolan explained in an interview in 2011, “is the caricature of the Catholic Church as crabby, nay-saying, down in the dumps, discouraging, on the run. And I’m thinking if there is anything that should be upbeat, affirming, positive, joyful, it should be people of faith.”

Perhaps Dolan can be both gracious and critical while speaking about the president.  The end result may teach Americans a significant lesson just before the presidential election.

Dolans encouraging “Catholics like Bidn, Sebelius, Pelosi and Durbin to destroy the Church he’s supposed to be protecting.  Will he be supporting the next unjust war against Iran, too? Sure, why not?

  • Deacon Ed Peitler

Please, Cardinal Dolan, do NOT let your ego get in the way of doing the right thing.  You either stand with Christ and His Church or you stand against Him.  The ONLY option is for NEITHER candidate to speak but for you, Cardinal, to use this opportunity as a shepherd of the Church to propose the Church’s teaching and understanding on a whole array of issues: abortion, religious freedom, forcing religious institutions to adhere to morally objectionable practices, the constitutional protection against government interfering with the free practice of religion, etc etc.  To give either candidate a platform to be funny when so much is at stake makes a mockery of what we face as Catholics and as Americans.  If, Cardinal, you think that you are about to court the favor of Obama and his people, as well as the media, you are being very naive.

Cardinal, just do the right thing.  Let’s not have another “Notre Dame experience.”

    • gespin3549

Deacon, thank you for your comments. I hear so many deacons today compromising the church in their liberalistic pluralism, and it is refreshing to find that tere are deacons out there who stand 100% with holy mother church!

    • Ed

      Thank you Deacon.
It is indeed sad and heretical that one of the most visible Catholic leaders of this country is willing to further corrupt our Catholic Identity in the same fashion as Fr. Jenkins and Notre Dame.  Why is it that Cardinal Dolan cannot even keep the corruption out of the USCCB, he is the council’s president?  What exactly, will these men answer when asked how they preformed their obligations as a shepherd?

    • Howard Kainz

Dolan was our archbishop in Milwaukee for several years. He is a very affable, unassuming, conservative, but I could never understand the heightened expectations that surrounded him after his elevation to the cardinalate.

      • Smokescreek

Let’s hope he can grow fast. He needs to read the story of Bishop John Hughes, who aimed to convert the world…not split the difference with Evil.

    • Florin S.

You’re right…we are talking here about millions and millions of human lives being exterminated and yet – they will be laughing and joking with the man – Obama – who not only aggressively supports and advances this slaughter but the man who voted against the ‘born alive infant act’ which offers care and comfort for the infant who survives abortion.  Card. Dolan is dealing with evil … and giving evil a platform at the expense of millions of unborn babies yet to come.  I hope he realizes this before it’s too late…but I’m sure we’ll see pictures of Card. Dolan slapping Obama on the back and laughing with him, just as we saw a picture of Fr. Jennings holding on to Obama’s arms and looking adoringly up at him….

    • Florin S.

And I wonder too if Cardinal Dolan would have sat down to dinner and a good time with Hitler…Hitler caused the death of almost 10 million people.  Obama is promoting the death of tens of millions … how can Card. Dolan sit down and laugh and drink with him? Sure, Jesus went among sinners – but He did it in a respectful, quiet, dignified, selfless way – when they showed a need for Him and a willingness to convert. Obama uses everything as a political platform – Card. Dolan should follow Pope Benedict’s example when he refused to meet with Nancy Pelosi in public so she could not use their meeting as a political platform.

    • The Truth

He does realize that there’s a Presidential election coming up. This man is the head of an administration that is attacking religious freedom. Not to mention his entire worldview is in direct opposition as to what I always believed the church teaches. By inviting him you’re justifying him to misguided Catholics. You’re part of the problem not the solution. It makes no sense to me. Can someone please help me to understand this. Why invite the devil into your home to tempt you? Anyone that tells me they’re christian and figure out when life begins is obviously not a serious christian.

    • Lisa D

My prayer ….. all who would traditionally go to this event … take your money and donate it directly to the Catholic Charities and completely by pass the event in protest of the attendance of President Obama.  We MUST stand unified for religious liberty.

The Democratic Party is also adding Same-Sex “marriage” to its platform this year. The last sentence in #2357 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992) reads: “Under no circumstances can they (homosexual acts) be approved.” How could any sentient, moral person ever invite the very leader of the ticket which is adopting the normalization of homosexuality

    • Florin S.

And same sex marriage is being promoted everywhere – there’s a new television show coming out entitled: “The New Normal” with a byline ‘family is relative’…promoting all  kinds of deviant relationships – be careful what your children watch because they are being seduced by the media into believing that anything goes…the new normal is that all is normal…

“Paraphasing” a bit: If you don’t behave as you believe, eventually you will believe as you behave.  Inviting a clear foe of Church teaching is simply hypocritical.  We “sheep” need clear direction from our Church and this is NOT it.  I encourage all to view the new internet TV site ChurchMilitantTV.  The segment discusses why anyone in the pew would be confused by the mixed messages we are receiving from our bishops.  This event is just another one of those mixed messages.

Sounds like Cardinal Dolan has decided that the future of the faith lies in compromising with the pro-abortion, anti-religious, kleptocrats on the left – after all isn’t the Church all about ‘social justice’ – those tablets with 10 rule is just sooo out of date.  What’s the saying ‘Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me? – Sounds like Dolan is traveling down the path of all ‘enlightened Catholics’.  You can’t trust a liar, and 0Bama has more than proven his willingness to lie. I guess the forced transfer of wealth and government administered ‘social justice’ is too big of an attraction to resist.

As for Catholic Charities, any organization that is so economically ignorant and willing to lie to their supporters  when they knowingly contribute to  pro-abortion organizations and then, when caught, deny the fungibility of money,  will get no support from this Catholic.

If I were a betting person, I think that His Emminence will use the opportunity for a zing against the Marxist-in-Chief…  At least one could hope.  A public spanking at a dinner would be some medicine to chasten this individual who has used the Executive Branch as his private playground for his lust for power and his wife’s vacations.  His Emminence could be setting the stage to remind all that Holy Mother the Church will always take precedence over civil government.

    • Mark Rutledge

I suspect the same, clingermanocds.  Unfortunately, in any discussion the media has the final word.  The good Cardinal may be showing some  naivete if he believes remarks made in defense of Church teaching, no matter how delicately delivered, will be reported fairly in contrast to President Obama’s remarks, which will likely be the same sugary shallow bromides we’ve come to expect.  Alas, I suspect we are looking at a big PR victory for the Obama campaign at the expense of the Catholic Church.

      • Joanne S.

You are SO right! I agree 100%.

  • GHU

This so disheartening. On the one hand we are supposed to be fighting against the HHS mandate for religious liberty. Then we learn Cardinal Dolan is inviting the very person who is persecuting the Church for some funny jokes and to raise lots of $$$ for Catholic Charities? Isn’t this exactly the attitude of the scandals of CCHD and now CRS supporting organizations that go against Catholic teaching? Obama and his administration are the most pro-abortion, pro- same-sex “marriage” , anti-American and culture of death groups we’ve had in Washington. It’s time that the Catholic Church (the USCCB) in the USA wake up to the fact that the Democratic Party is NOT the same party it was and stop supporting it. Frankly, I’m tired of all this. Stop Cardinal Dolan, Bishops, Priests, Deacons giving us mixed messages or silence on these important issues and actually speak up, teach and defend the Catholic Church!

  • Joanne S.

I think the phoney attacks on the church for allegedly favoring the GOP re: the mandate have hit a nerve. I hope I’m wrong, but the historically Democrat-sympathizing bishops seem to be bending over backwards to get the most pro-abortion, anti-Catholic president in history re-elected.

The Obama-obsessed media will use this opportunity to play this in his favor. You can bet on it.

American liberalism is a theology and the Democrat Party is the church.  To be Democrat and Catholic is an  oxymoron.

  • An Observer

The Rev. Dolan will surrender.  To even invite the Satanic creature who is now occupying the White House is an outrageous scandal for non-Americanized [Pope Leo 13] Catholics.

  • Alecto

Does anyone else looking at Dolan think he’s perhaps attended far too many of these sychophantic simpering lovefests and perhaps should reacquaint himself with the concept of fasting and penance?     Gluttony is still a deadly sin.

  • Alecto

Oh, and one more thing on the topic of Cardinal Dolan.  Does anyone else wonder why the Alabama bishop has filed suit to halt implementation of that legislature’s passage of an anti-illegal immigration law, but Dolan & company haven’t filed any lawsuits to stop gay marriage in New York passed by that state’s legislature?  Surely, the NY diocese has far more resources than Alabama?  Aren’t you just the slightest bit curious about that?

    • Michael Paterson-Seymour

      On what possible grounds?

After all, same-sex marriage has been legal in Massachusetts since May 17, 2004; in Connecticut since November 12, 2008; in Iowa since April 27, 2009; in Vermont since September 1, 2009; in New Hampshire since January 1, 2010.  No one has suggested that any of these laws are open to constitutional challenge.

It can be plausibly argued that no state is obliged to introduce SSM, but no one, to my knowledge, has suggested it cannot do so, if it chooses

      • Luke

As soon as the New York State Marriage Equality Act was passed into law in 2011, as a true follower of Jesus Christ and his teachings and a member of the Catholic Church (i.e., the remnant), I went about researching whether this immoral law could be overturned.  I quickly discovered a New York State Court of Appeals case, Hernandez v. Robles, 855 N.E.2d 1 (N.Y. 2006), that dealt with the constitutionality of same-sex marriage in New York.  In New York, it needs to be remembered the Court of Appeals is the highest court of appeal in this state (meaning at the state level it is like the Supreme Court of the United States).
The majority of judges, in Hernandez, while obviously being pro-homosexual and while making vile statements in support of the homosexual lifestyle, still held same-sex persons did not have a substantive due-process right (an inalienable right)  to be married under the New York Constitution.  Specifically, Justice R. S. Smith, writing the majority opinion, held; “. . . the New York Constitution  does not compel recognition of marriages between members of the same-sex.”  Although, in the  language of the New York Constitution, same-sex persons were not explicitly excluded from the right to marriage, the judges in Hernandez stated that they were the final interpreters of the meaning the New York Constitution.  Until overturned (and it has not been), the Hernandez case then became binding legal precedent (known as stare decisis) on the issue of same-sex marriage in New York State.  Thus, although the New York Constitution does not explicitly exclude same-sex marriage as a constitutional right, the Hernandez court, through its binding legal precedent, in effect interpreted the New York Constitution as if it had explicitly banned same-sex marriage.
The Hernandez court then deferred to the New York legislature the same-sex marriage issue stating: “Whether such marriages should be recognized is a question to be addressed by the Legislature.”  However, the Hernandez court, in its majority opinion, never told the New York Legislature that it could violate the New York Constitution, along with its own legal precedent, if it chose to legalize same-sex marriage in New York.  The New York States Marriage Equality Act is, in fact, a violation of the standing precedent promulgated by the New York Court of Appeals in its Hernandez decision in 2006.  “Why?”  Might you say.  Please read on.
The crux of the problem with the 2011 New York Marriage Equality Act is it simply violates the precedent of the 2006 Hernandez decision and, derivatively, the New York Constitution itself.  Under the New York Constitution (due to the precedent of Hernandez, unless overturned, which explicitly held that same-sex persons have no substantive due process right to marriage under the NY Constitution), the New York Constitution has to be legally (i.e. constitutionally) amended in order to validly legalize same-sex marriage in New York State (which I hope never happens).  As it is currently written and as it has been illegally effectuated, the New York Marriage Equality Act is an illegal and unconstitutional tacit amendment to the New York Constitution.
In this respect, pursuant to the New York Constitution, Article XIX, Section 1, the New York legislature (and the governor whom would sign any potential bill into law) cannot unilaterally amend the Constitution on its own (this is in fact what happened with the 2011 NY Marriage Equality Act in light of the Hernandez decision) without first submitting this issue as a referendum vote to the voting citizens of New York.  In fact, the whole amendment process in New York State is a very complicated process, and according to Article XIX, Section 1, the NY legislature is required to jump over a number of complicated hurdles before it can even submit the legal issue of same-sex marriage, as a referendum, to the voting citizens of New York (see generally NY Const., Article XIX, Sect. 1).
When the NY legislature has satisfied the required legal hurdles of the NY Constitution, Article XIX, Sect. 1, it then can “. . . submit each proposed amendment or amendments to the people for approval in such manner and at such times as the legislature shall prescribe; and if the people shall approve and ratify such amendment or amendments by a majority of the electors voting thereon, such amendment or amendments shall become part of the constitution on the first day of January next after such approval.”  While not discussed here, and alternative means to legally amend the constitution is through a state constitutional convention as prescribed in Article XIX, Section 2, of the NY Constitution  (I believe the next time this could happen, pursuant to the NY constitution, is in 2017).
Therefore, in light of the binding legal precedent of the 2006 Hernandez decision, the 2011 New York Marriage Equality Act should be unconstitutional since it failed to follow the amendment requirements of  the NY Constitution, Article XIX, Section 1.  For instance, we all know the legal issue of same-sex marriage was never submitted to New York voters for a referendum vote before it was signed into law.

      • Alecto

The minute those laws infringe on the ability of Catholics or anyone’s right of free exercise we have standing and a duty to challenge them.  Every single one of those were state supreme court edicts, not popular vote changes.

    • Luke

In reply to your question,  I believe the NY diocese, along with most bishops of New York State and the USCCB, implicitly support same-sex marriage (along with many other abhorrent sins — these bishops, are some of the wolves in sheep’s clothing Jesus warned his followers about in scripture; they are also modern day Judases).

This means Christian legal advocacy groups, such as the New York State Conference of Catholic Bishops, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, Alliance Defending Freedom (used to be called the Alliance Defense Fund), the American Center for Law and Justice, and the Liberty Counsel must mount a strong legal attack against the the NY Marriage Equality Act, which they have not done.  I personally have contacted many of the aforementioned groups, explaining the foregoing legal arguments, and I have been met with silence, indifference and obfuscation.  It is my belief many of these groups have been controlled from the start, or subsequently infiltrated, by representatives of the pro-gay and pro-abortion lobbies.

With respect to the New York State Conference of Catholic Bishops, after I contacted them, they told me they believed the Hernandez decision allowed the NY legislature and governor to legally enact the Marriage Equality Act into law because the majority opinion in that case authorized the legislature to do so.  I explained that Hernandez decision did not authorize the legislature to violate the required amendment process of the New York Constitution.  In the end, the legal representative from the the NY Conference of Catholic bishops chose to agree to disagree and to this day they have not filed a lawsuit attempting to overturn the unconstitutional 2011 NY Marriage Equality Act.  My personal belief is the pro-homosexual and pro-abortion lobbies, or at least very liberal elements of the Catholic Church, have infiltrated the NYS Conference of Catholic Bishops, with the intent (and tacit approval of the New York bishops) to drag their feet with respect to overturning  immoral laws in New York State (the same can be said of the USCCB at the state and federal levels).

I also contacted the New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms and have met with a similar fate.  Although New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms did file a lawsuit attempting to overturn the NY Marriage Equality Act, its causes of action appear to based on technical due process procedural violations of legislative process by the New York legislature when they voting on the Marriage Equality Act bill.  To date and as expected they have not gotten very far in the court system with their lawsuit (up to this point they have not won their lawsuit on appeal).  They decided not to include the foregoing legal argument because I assume their legal representative inappropriately decided they could not win on that argument.  However, they could have easily added the foregoing legal cause of action (i.e. violation of the amendment provision of the NY Constitution based on the Hernandez precedent) to their lawsuit without any negative legal ramifications.  This was the strongest legal argument they had, as legal precedent was on their side, based on the slam dunk Hernandez decision.  However, they refused to include this legal cause of action in their lawsuit.  Is their lawsuit a mere ruse meant to bring permanent closure to the legality and constitutionality of the Marriage Equality Act while having no clear intention of actually winning the lawsuit they filed?  Their website, with respect to an article about same sex marriage, does show an image of wedding cake with two male figurines on top.  To me, this image on their website is a slap in the face to all Christians opposing same-sex marriage and appears to show they are really supporting same-sex marriage; as it seems to jokingly promote same-sex marriage.

I also contacted some of the other foregoing Christian legal advocacy groups.  However, I did not get very far with these other organizations either.

In conclusion Christians,  I believe we are in the end days when wrong is right and right is wrong, when wolves and sheep’s clothing having infiltrated the Catholic and Christian Churches and Organizations from the top done, when the mystery of inequity has reached its apex, and when most Christians have apostatized from the true faith and teachings of the the divine Jesus Christ.  What does this all mean?  Have faith and prepare for the long waited return of our messiah Jesus Christ!

      God Bless!

I’ve personally met with Cardinal Dolan, and I gleaned a few things about him in our interaction:
He’s an affable, funny, and charming guy. His heart is centered in Christ and I have no doubts about the veracity or intensity of his faith. He’s genuine. He’s also sharp as a tack.
In fact, he reminded me very much of the quote to be “as innocent as doves and as cunning as serpents” (but with an emphasis on the cunning part).

Dolan, if anything, is one of our greatest allies against Obama and all his administration’s evil actions. He’s been one of the most vocal and active opponents of the president’s HHS mandate. He doesn’t mince words, and he follows through with his actions.  How many other bishops have been as instrumental in organizing Catholics to protest against the government’s actions during the Fortnight for Freedom? Dolan has been a frontrunner in all of this.

The Cardinal is a shrewd man. There is nothing smarter than keeping a close eye on your enemies, and this does force Obama into a Catholic setting–despite the wealth and media fanfare typical of fancy fundraisers, the president is definitely not playing on home court for this event. Obama will be on the defensive that whole evening, all jokes and giggles aside. I may not understand his reasons for doing this, but I do trust that Dolan’s overall motives are in the right place.

This also is an opportunity for bipartisanship, like the article above has stated. I don’t know about you guys, but this is a chance to take a notch out of the political blood lust our nation seems so fond of. I can’t stand what Obama stands for. But I also can’t stand this hyper extremist “hate-thine-political-enemy-with-all-thy-guts” atmosphere. Honestly, I want him out of office as bad you do, but do you really think Christ ever went into rants about how Caesar is such a big jerk who hates and oppresses the Jews, or went apoplectic because someone on “His side” dared to extend a hand to the emperor? Our Savior was a man who dined with prostitutes, Pharisees, and gentiles. Extraordinary things can happen when we break bread with others.

Pray for him, and for all of our bishops to have the courage to face the gov’t square in the eye and defend our religious liberty. Pray that they can lead us, all of the Catholic faithful, to become servants of Truth. Trust in God. And no matter what or who: love! Love with all your heart and strength everyone you come across, friend and foe, bishop and president, Democrat and Republican. That is the greatest challenge we face today.

    • Maxandfrancis

“affable, funny, and charming” doesn’t cut it.  We need courageous and willing to die for the faith, NOT play footsie with her enemies.

    • Christine

Maria: Save it. This is the same Cardinal who refuses to apply Canon 915 to pro-abort Gov. Cuomo because he prefers to “dialogue” instead, and who does nothing of substance about the openly gay-friendly St. Francis Xavier parish in his diocese.

As to love: LOVE manifested itself by fashioning a cord of whips, overturning tables, and driving the money changers from the Temple. LOVE manifested itself by calling the Pharisees “hypocrites”, a “brood of vipers”, and “whitewashed sepulchers.” Our Lord spoke strongly against evildoers and never compromised with sin. When I look at our shepherds today, for the most part I see weakness, accommodation, compromise, fear. The whole thing is a terrible disgrace.

    • Suz

Maria, I applaud you!!!  This is truly what Christ asks of all of us!  We may not like what Cardinal Dolan is doing or understand his motives, but he truly is a man of God and we must trust him and pray that whatever he’s devising works!  May God bless you and the Holy Catholic Church!

Suz, then you are also applauding a modern day Judas, namely Cardinal Dolan.  Judas, like Cardinal Dolan, appeared on the surface to be a holy man of God  – he was one of the twelve apostles.  However, just beneath that thinly veiled surface of feigned holiness was a wreathing viper ready to pounce on Jesus and destroy him for only 30 peaces of silver.  It is obvious that Cardinal Dolan shares the same sentiments as Judas.  In our present day,  Cardinal Dolan is also ready and willing to pounce on the Catholic Church (i.e., The Mystical Body of Christ) and destroy it for his 30 pieces of silver.  What Cardinal Dolan is doing is tatamount to allowing two raging bulls (obama and romney) into the proverbial china shop (i.e., the Catholic Church).  Cardinal Dolan obviously has no intention of telling Obama or Romney to repent of their wicked sins.

Catholics Christians and all Christians you need to wake up!  You should not vote for any modern day politicians, as all major political parties, including the Democratic and Republican parties, support vile and wicked sexual education programs (it turns out all the bishops of the USCCB also support vile and wicked sexual education programs in Catholic schools, expecially K-8.), premarital sex, abortion, contraception programs, and homosexuality, among others.  You are basically choosing between Stalin and Hitler (Romney and Obama are basically both mass murders through programs they either instituted and/or supported that funded the mass murder of unborn babies) when voting for these two candidates.  Do your homework on the draconian and pro-abortion Romneycare health program instituted by Romney and his administration during his reign as governor of Massachusetts.  Do I need to mention Obamacare?  Do your homework to find out how massively pro-gay Romney is.  Jesus, through his Word in the Bible, never said we had a religious duty to vote for evil civil rulers.  He did tell us we need to prayer for our civil rulers.  So pray fervently for these two politicians, but if they will not repent, and God knows this, pray they be removed from power through peaceful means.

My wise advice is that Christians not vote for any modern day politicians — they are all corrupt and have no problem sacrificing the unborn to have their pet programs passed into law (the federal Omnibus Budget Act comes to mind).  If you do, you are basically selling your soul to the devil for handouts you would have gotten anyway.  Instead, give up the TV, movies and lewd magazines and newspapers, which are really gateways to hell, and pray and fast that God put the best leaders in power in the United States.  To be honest with you, Obama, and Bush before him, and Clinton before him, were all judgments from God for the sins of this country – premarital sex, contraception, abortion and homosexuality, among many others.

Repent of your sins and be saved, and if, as a Christian, you knowingly voted for any politician who advocated immoral laws and policies, go to confession to a Catholic priest and you will be forgiven.  If not a Christian, get baptized (original sin is removed and all your personal sins are forgiven) and become a new Christian in the Catholic Church.

God has promised, through his Word that:

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14).

    • Gamartin

I pray you are right.  We need strong clergy to give us some faith in the institution of the Church.    I just wish he was more like St. Michael and less like St. Francis.  My hunch is that there would be a Catholic resurgence if we had some core belief on which we do not compromise.   We had that prior to Vat II. big time, now we are at the other extreme.

    • Luke

Maria, the bible warns that we should be on guard of the devil appearing as an angel of light.  The devil, through his followers (including one called Cardinal Dolan — a modern day Judas), loves to use charm, affability and feigned concern for the Church to mislead many to follow his wicked ways.  Remember Eve, in the Garden of Eden?  Do you think the devil was mean and rude when he seduced Eve in the Garden of Eden?  Of course not, he must have appeared charming, affable and sympathetic to Eve in order to manipulate her into disobeying God.  I am sure Judas also appeared on the surface to very nice and affable.  The question is are you and others who have been beguiled by these wolves in sheep’s clothing going to follow Jesus or the modern day Judases, like Cardinal Dolan.  Another thought — have your ever heard of the expression; “Birds of the same feather flock together?”
Please consider the following statements made by Jesus, in some
cases, to the reprehensible and hypocritical religious leaders of his day
(i.e., the scribes and pharisees) and, in other cases, to the
reprehensible and hypocritical religious leaders of our day (i.e., the wolfs in
sheep’s clothing, like Cardinal Dolan and most, if not all, of the bishops
of the USCCB and the priests and religious who support them).

You brood of vipers!  How can you
speak good, when you are evil?  For out of the abundance of the heart the
      mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34).

For I know this, that after my departing
shall grievous wolves enter among you, not sparing the flock.  Also of
your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things to draw away
      disciples after them (Acts 20:29-30).

But there were false prophets also among
the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall
bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring
upon themselves swift destruction.  And MANY shall follow their pernicious
ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of (blasphemed)
      (II Peter 2:1-2).

Yes, and all that will live godly in
Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.  But EVIL MEN AND SEDUCERS shall
grow worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived (II Timothy 3:13).

      Now
the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the LATTER TIMES some shall depart from
the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking
LIES IN HYPOCRISY; having their conscience seared with a hot iron (I Timothy
      4:1).

You come from your father, the devil, and
you desire to do what your father wants you to do.  The devil was a
murderer from the beginning.  He has never been truthful.  He doesn’t
know what the truth is.  Whenever he tells a lie, he’s doing what comes
naturally to him.  He’s a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44).

I hope and pray the foregoing bible verses
clarify things for you and others who have been mislead by the false prophets
of our day (e.g., obama and romney who both unabashedly support many abhorrent
sins like premarital sex, homosexuality, contraceptive use, and abortion) and
by the wolfs in sheep’s clothing of our day (e.g., Cardinal Dolan and most, if
not all, of the bishops of the USCCB who clearly have no intention of ever
telling either obama or romney to repent of their wicked sins and, by their
hypocritical actions, appear to actually support obama’s and romney’s wicked
      sins).

  • Sarah M

How many of you have read Fr. Elijah (there is a similar situation in the story line, being naive is a pretty horizontal way of thinking about it)? I don’t think Cardinal Dolan is condoning Obama. I think he is trying to open lines of communication with the administration which has not been good about meeting with the American Bishops

Maria. Your long-winded shout-out of Cardinal Dolan is appreciated. However, his invite has created confusion and a great deal of discouragement among the faithful.  This outrageous move enables the media and others to question  the Church’s sincerity in the struggle for religious freedom. Please Cardinal Dolan, withdraw this invitation. It should be noted  two  presidential candidates were not invited by the cardinals of the New York diocese in the past.

Sorry about all you nay sayers. The Cardinal realizes that he is dealing with a man of good will who has his values and thinks of this as a political battle, and fails to see it for what it really is.Those who are thinking in terms of anti Christ would do well to put all of your energies into praying that the Holy
Spirit enlighten this otherwise good man.
The Cardinal is in no way endorsing the anti marriage, pro abortion views of the President, but probably looking on this occasion as a say to serve as a conduit of the Holy Spirit.

  • Maxandfrancis

BS about the olive branch thing!  Obama is evil and anti-Catholic.  No Catholic event should include him.  The Cardinal needs to stop laughing and start seeing how dangerous this whole thing is.

The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

    • Christine

Misplaced charity. The point of Our Lord’s
association with sinners was to bring them to repentance. Obama shows no
signs of repentance, but is viciously attacking and undermining the
Church on numerous fronts, with no signs of abatement.
Dolan’s predecessors refused to invite pro-abort pols like Clinton
& Kerry to the Al Smith dinner, sending a clear message that there
would be NO compromise on this issue. Considering that Obama is 10 times more
pro-abortion than both these men combined, attacking the Church, trying to coax her children to do evil and lose their souls in the process, Dolan would have every right
to refuse to offer an invitation. Instead, the message sent here is one
of compromise, accommodation, and WEAKNESS, by a bishop ordained to
protect the flock from ravenous wolves like Obama.

For the leading prelate of the mother church in this country to deign to speak to the creature known as Obama during an event known for its vivacious is I feel completely inappropriate at this time.  If the Cardinal has something up his clerical sleeve it better be damn good because in itself the extension of this invitation sends exactly the wrong message to those of us who understand we are at war with Obama and his fellow maggots.

  • Bill

One the of the strong suspicions that Cdl Dolan leaves himself exposed to is that he is being BLACKMAILED. It suggests that an impropriety in his past or in the Church in general has been brought to Dolan’s attention and he is “choosing discretion as the better part of valor.” I have known doctors and nurses who have given up employment rather than work in a hospital or clinic which provided abortions or sterilization procedures. Can’t the Grand Poobash of the USCCB show even the slighest bit of heroism?

  • William

Cardinal Dolan is selling out to political correctness here, who is he trying to please, really? Obama slaps us in the face, then doubles down and announces that he intends to continue slapping us in the face, and the Cardinal Archbishop of New York invites him to dinner? What the hell?

  • theresaEH

I think Cardinal Dolan has something up he sleeve if you ask me eh!

  • Olivia K.

Jesus ate at tables with the sinner, tax collectors, and Pharisees. Are we to be the ones who questioned Him about it? Cardinal Dolan has been, so far, a warrior for Christ. Why should we doubt him now? We are just guessing his motives for inviting Obama, why don’t we just wait and see what happens. Cardinal Dolan is being charitable in extending this invitation, more Christ-like than we are calling Obama names such as the anti-christ.

Jesus did not give the sinners a public forum to be advocates for their sins.  He did not publically endorse by affiliation their beliefs or political positions.

Jesus converted sinners on a personal level.

      Sorry.

    • Alecto

I’m curious, can you cite one example of how Cardinal Dolan has been this “warrior for Christ”, because in all honesty, I can’t think of any example.  He skipped NY state for a conference when the legislature was being pressured by big hedge fund money and same sex marriage activists.  He pals up to Gov. Cuomo, who actually started the same sex marriage law in NY, lives with a woman not his wife, supports and funds abortion and euthanasia, and still receives the Eucharist.  Cardinal Dolan supports amnesty for people who invaded our country and supports stealing and extorting my hard-earned money to pay for them.  I have nothing but contempt for that man who resembles Christ as much as Kermit the Frog does.

Why imbue him with some superhuman wisdom and goodness which he clearly does not exhibit?  Dolan should be moved to Hollywood, he’s a natural there. LOL

Bull Manure! This is a scandal to the faithful no matter how you slice it. Father Pavone of Priests for Life is 100% correct.

“There comes a time when enough is enough and we can no longer afford to give people a reason to doubt our position as a Church.

“On August 1, the unjust HHS mandate went into effect for Priests for
Life and millions of other Americans, and I announced to our staff that
we are disobeying the mandate. So no, I don’t think the invitation is appropriate at this time.” -Father Pavone

  • Rick DeLano

Yes, Charlie, we are to understand the actions of others in a charitable light, and your article is plausible from that standpoint.

The problem is that Cardinal Dolan has lost the gay marriage fight in New York, exactly by listening to “advisors” who assured His Eminence that such a thing could never happen.

So the (then) Archbishop set off to attend to administrative duties at the USCCB, while back at the ranch gay marriage was foisted upon the people of New York (I pray it will not be so, but it is at least possible that this incredible misfeasance will turn out to have been the straw that broke the camel’s back for our darkening civilization).

It appears the Cardinal still has the same advisors.

Our prelates have drastically misread the signs of the times.

  • Martial_Artist

I read many of the dispirited and upset comments, and I think it likely that too many of those commenting in that tone are shortchanging Cardinal Dolan. I would not be surprised to discover that he has a strategy to get his message through to Obama, and that he will be able to do so at the dinner. I think it the better part of wisdom to trust Cardinal Dolan and pray for the success of whatever plan and tactic God has put in his mind.

I hope you are right, but sincerely I think you are reaching.

Don’t forget, the Catholic Church funds groups that finance abortion etc.   They are aligned with the socialists on social issues.  This fact is clearly documented.  I think Dolan has a sincere desire to perpetuate O and his social programs.  So, HHS will be decided in the courts.  Doan is onboard with Doan  for reection and is delivering the cCatholic vote.

Beware of prelates who always are photographed laughing, hugging, and slapping people on the back.

“For is it man’s favor or God’s that I aspire to?Or am I seeking to please men? If I were still a man-pleaser, I should not be Christ’s bondservant.” (Galatians 1:10)

And this from St. John Chrysostom “On Preaching:”

“If, on the other hand,  (the preacher) was a weighty

speaker, but not indifferent to applause, he would probably

trim his sails to catch the popular breeze, and study to be

pleasant rather than profitable, to the great detriment of

Come on,  the Church has turned the unborn over to the mecry of Obama just so the Bishops can be seen as “nice” and non-judgmental.

The fight for religious liberty will be defined by the smiling picture of Obama and Dolan that will be plastered across the pages of the NY Times.

  • Southside Louie

“According to reports.” Last I heard, the media spokesman for the Arch of NY said he hadn’t been told anything about this supposed invitation. It occurs to me that Obama, knowing it likely he will not be invited, perhaps put these rumors about in order to make it difficult for Cardinal Dolan not to invite him, trying to make it look like an invitation withdrawn. How about we all settle down until there is something definite?

    • Christine

The archdiocese has already stated that Cdl Dolan will issue no public statement about the invitation. So it’s confirmed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003586781928 Magdalene Prodigal

It is a travesty and worse than the Notre Dame debacle.  An election year, a virulent enemy of the Church and of life itself and the Cardinal wants to share wine and dine and laugh with him. Great photo op telling Catholics it is ok to vote for this evil.

    • An Observer

That is exactly the worst consequence of his scandalous invitation.

  • Phil

Dolan is in my opinion a better politician than Obama or Romney.   He scandalizes the Church and i’m sure his favorable ratings are higher than either of the candidates.  Hell! he’ll probably use a few minutes of his time speaking berating the Church and how She needs to have a sense of humor,(if you ain’t laughing now, you’ll be crying when he gets done.)  May GOD have mercy on our shepherd.

Enough is enough. Stand up for your church, Cardinal Nolan, or step down from your position. If you decide to stand up it is also high time the Catholic Church in America makes public reparations for the Satanic Black Masses (one in particular in Charleston, SC, June 29, 1963) offered by at least one former Bishop of Chicago. And we wonder why our church is in a mess! Let’s get real, men!

I just don’t understand.  I hope that Cardinal Dolan knows what he’s doing.  I am afraid that he is lying down with snakes once more.  Maybe he’s still trying to find a way to get Federal money.  Personally, I think the Church should break with the government.

Anne.  My feeling is the same with regarding the church/state
501(c)(3) IRS laws.  The Church doesn’t need permission to give the Sacraments except Holy Matrimony.  So if a young cohabitating couple with three kids that are from Mexico, and don’t have ‘papers’, want to marry,  the bishops would rather let them live in sin than to offend the state’s tax rules.  Go figure.  JO

  • schmenz

His Eminence is living in a state of self-imposed delusions and as one who witnessed his lacklustre performance in Milwaukee, which stressed “smiles” over solid governance, it is clear that he has neither the stomach nor the will to seriously challenge the growing despotism forming in Washington.  The Church, still living in the foggy haze of Vatican 2 silliness, will not let go of the failed policy of “being nice”.  Like the designers of the Edsel they simply will not come to terms with the disaster they have created, and these disasters are doctrinal, liturgical and social.

You can put whatever benign veneer you wish on this monstrous situation but I will tell you simply that it stinks to High Heaven.

Just how many stilettos stuck in the Church’s back will it take for the Dolans, the Wuerls, yes even the Benedicts to come out of their self-induced lethargy?  Yes, we have some brave souls like Jenky here and there, but they are almost never backed up the the powers-that-be in ecclesiastical circles.

We have been enduring a mediocre bunch of clericals for decades upon decades now, and Dolan is very much a mediocrity.  I presume the reason for this dearth of holy priests, Bishops and Cardinals of late is that God is taking us to the wood shed in a very serious manner.  Perhaps we deserve what’s coming.

And yes, dear, hapless Cardinal Dolan, something IS coming, and it is coming from Washington, and you had better cease playing “nice” with this bloodthirsty, perverted monsters.

  • Gamartin

The Catholic Church has been funding Obama and his far left socialist/communists for years.  So, why change now.

  • Gamartin

The mission of “saving souls” fits best for the Church and the Bishops.    Somehow “saving souls” went out the window with Vat II.   Although the Bishops seem to have forgotten this, they have the keys to the “kingdom” , God ‘s Kingdom, locked away in the vault of tradition.  Unfortuately, Liberalism and Modernism have thrown away the access code to the vault and Bishops have been afloat ever since.

So remember from the doctrines of the past , if something does not make sense, there is a liberal behind it.

Who knows what Dolan is thinking or planning.  It may not be saving souls. . . .

This article strikes me as attempting to explain away that which has no good explanation.  Famously, there is a difference between patriotism and nationalism.  There is the same sort of difference regarding the ways to support the Church:  God is truth.

Dolan doesn’t seem to believe what JPII said in 1976…
“We are now standing in the face of the greatest historical confrontation
humanity has gone through. I do not think that wide circles of the American
society or wide circles of the Christian community realize this fully. We are
now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, of
the Gospel and the anti-Gospel. This confrontation lies within the plans of
divine providence. It is a trial which the whole Church . . . must take up.”

Obama is Not just opposed to Catholic teachings, as mentioned in 4th paragragh. Obama is putting policies into affect that literally stop or fine the teachings.

There should not be any complaining about the HHS mandate after this invite. The rest of us in the country (Catholic parisheners, protestant clergy, countless citizen organizations, etc.) will keep working non stop to stop mandate. Catholic Church will have NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN IF OBAMA IS RE-ELECTED OR HHS MANDATE GOES THROUGH. They are giving Obama a huge bust by inviting obama. This doesn’t even count the affect on all the confused catholics that don’t get the importance of putting in Pro-life politicians. We already have had to deal with the likes of the Kennedy’s and other catholics that have done countless damage to the Pro-Life cause.
    Dolan knows this.
I live and work and volunteer for pro-life within the diocese. The rest of us will do the work. Thanks for doing damage to all our work and efforts.

Until public recantations be demanded of pseudo-Catholic politicians and kindred ilk or, in in the case of defiance, excommunications be decreed , including retrospective ones (including certain clerics from cardinal down to priest); the United States hierarchy will receive no credibility and respect from orthodox Catholics, nor from the Church’s  enemies.

What fellowship does light have with darkness, Christ have with Belial?  Cardinal Dolan,  remember the Apostle Paul’s words!

Aug. 8th: Fr. Jennings invited Obama to Notre Dame and gave him a reward.  Do we see any positive results from that. For Card. Dolan to declare that Obama has high regard for the Catholic Church/faith is naive. Why did Obama surround himself with ‘Catholics’ who stand against the Church, her teaching and her Bishops?  To me, Card. Dolan acts more like a ‘good ol’ boy’ politician and loves being in front of a crowd, hob nobbing with the great ones…sure, he gets out there when things become dramatic – the HHS Mandate will cost the Church organizations money…Card. Dolan said he will not refuse the Eucharist to anyone because that would ‘politicize’ the Eucharist. I don’t understand…Nancy Pelosi has become more and more arrogant and aggressive on standing against the Church on grave moral issues like abortion and same sex marriage and she lures other ‘Catholics’ to her side by publicly declaring that the Church and the Bishops are out of step. She is doing great harm not only to her own soul but to others.  And she is being affirmed in her public sin by being allowed to receive the Eucharist as a Catholic in good standing.  Will Card. Dolan offer the Eucharist to child molesters, to serial rapists?  He makes me very uneasy – I hope he has more luck with Obama than poor Father Jenkins did.  Obama will use the platform that Card. Dolan has given him to show everyone that he really IS in line with the Church and so Catholics can vote for him…but, God, of course, can bring good out of evil, so we’ll pray and then we’ll see.

Cardinal Dolan. Don’t believe him (Obama). He is a deceptive liar. And you dear Cardinal are confusing the faithful. Obama has declared war against the Church. Now is not the time for humorous speeches.

  • Immaculatavictory

Could Dolan take this opportunity to belittle a administration that has chipped away at our Constitution? Could he be planning a blatant slap in Obama’s face?
My hope is that this invite will somehow change a heart…a presidential one.
Belittling and slapping won’t do the job I know…but Christ can. Christ can change hearts.
Pray for Obama’s conversion. A conversion out of the White House.

I have a problem here.  Is the Church’s role to defend the U.S. Constitution or to defend and EVANGELIZE  Christ’s Church?  Christ said: “Live by the sword, die by the sword.”  I say: “Live by the LAWYER, die by the LAWYER.”  The Church has been in a coma for 50 years and now is shocked to what they woke up to.  God Help Us…JO

  • The Truth

This is getting ridiculous. The Church has been supporting Democratic poltoicians for yrs. even when they directly attack it! This nonsense of extending an olive branch is just that nonsense. The church tells me abortion is MURDER! and then turns around and invites this guy to a dinner?!!!! I’m confused. What? Dolan’s going to convert him?

This is almost the case with the post-Vatican-Two-Council United States hierarchy [a few praise-worthy exceptions] and the Democrat Party as constituted for the past forty years.  The Satanic monster now in the White House and his collaborators and enablers are now bringing the chickens home to roost.

Cardinal Dolan has expressed concern that the Catholic Church
be considered “crabby, nay-saying.” We are “crabby, nay-saying” about the
killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriages!!

In 1996, Cardinal O’Connor did not invite President Clinton or
Senator Dole to the dinner and, in 2004, neither Sen. John Kerry nor President
    Bush were invited.

Cardinal Dolan, if you do not rescind your invitation to

Hopefully he’s fasting and praying that his words and actions do not reflect against God’s Holy Will.  That may take a far different approach than the usual Irish political wit in order to cover over the Truth as embarrassing as it may make people in authority feel.  I just picture how Pope JPII dealt with those he knew from experience were dangerous to others’ God given freedoms and lives as well as being dangerous to their own souls.  He shook that finger and showed he meant business without concern about his own life.

If standing up for the Catholic Faith and morals including the murder if over 5 MILLION innocent Children (and growing daily) And the defense of Traditional Marriage as God intended it, AND our religious Freedoms means that I am GRUMPY and DOUR….well then LET IT BE!  I guess the same would have been said for the martyrs in Mexico in the 1920′s or the martyrs in England during the horrfic rein of King Hentry VIII!!!
I guess these same people would be complaining of lack of love in Joan of Arc! They would not like her at ALL as she led her soldiers into BATTLE and they actually killed people for the freedom of the Catholic Faith.
The protestants are the ones that live in a world of laughing, singing and enjoying life no matter what is happening around them. Catholics are called to stand up for the truth, even if it means going to prison, and to do penance, fasting and prayer. If you ask me Cardinal Dolan is looking more protestant every day – Episcopalian to be exact!

Cardinal Dolan has disappointed many Catholics by inviting President Obama, who is clearly at odds with Catholic doctrine.  However, many, many other Catholics will vote for Obama because of their perception that Democrats help the poor, immigrants, elderly, children, etc., through their support for social welfare programs, while Republicans “favor the rich.”  Although I will not vote for him, I look for Obama to win in November, with the help of Catholic voters who receive mixed messages from the hierarchy.  In fact, although I have no proof other than actions such as Cardinal Dolan’s, I believe many of the Catholic hierarchy will also cast their votes for Obama.

  • Angel548

One question – Are all the Catholics attending going to leave their Catholicity in the car so they can sit down and break bread with the most pro-abortion president in the history of our country?

Cardinal Dolan should understand about sitting down to dialogue. He sat with President Obama and promises were made and then the President reneged on those promises. So much for dialogue.

Finally, kudos go to the late Cardinal O’Connor, he made the right decision and did not invite President Clinton. The money raised at this dinner will be tainted with the blood of the millions of babies that have been aborted since President Obama took office. The Peter Principle: a man rises to the level of his incompetence.  Cardinal Dolan once said, “New York is just like Milwaukee, only bigger.”  No it ain’t, Your Eminence. And the political sharks in New York – and Washington – keep hoping that you think that way.  Jokes and back slapping can go only so far, and they do not work in the bigger arena.   This requires prayer and fasting. I am sure that Cardinal Dolan is a man of prayer, and as for fasting…let us hope.

  • JP

The Cdl probably believes he had to issue the invite as a sign of mature sophistiacation. Not sure why in light of this President’s shoddy treatment of him and our Church. And he must realize that all the President wants is the photo op which shows a smiling President and Cdl Dolan shaking hands like best buddies. That kind of photo is worth quite a few votes in a number of important swing states.

How do our Bishops expect Catholics to take their homilies and directions seriously when they themselves do not. And no, Cdl Dolan will not use the Al Smith Dinner to scold the President. That’s not the way our nuanced, sophisticated, over-credentialed Bishops operate. In the wake of their sophisticated politiking will be a trail of moral confusion.

Replace “charitable” above with the word “cowardly” and you have a much more accurate article.  Dolan is less a bishop and more a slick politician.  Could you imagine St John the Baptist being “charitable” by schmoozing with Herod and kissing Herod’s rear end instead of admonishing Herod for adultery??!!.  What a disgrace the Catholic Hierarchy in America has become!

  • Mtiritilli

So typical of the Vatican II Church to “dance with the devil.”  Wake-up Cardinal Dolan, Barack Obama is no friend of the Catholic Church.  By inviting him to the event, you are telling Catholics that there’s no problem with abortion, contraception and the “Death Panels” set-up in Obamacare to “Murder by Legislation and the Court”  Seniors and other “inconvenient people.”  How naive you are Cardinal! and how outrageous that you extended such an invitation to a man who will continue his persecution of the Church if given another four years.  And Cardinal, your pathetic actions show you  are certainly aiding-and-abetting in that horror.

Please realize that this dinner is not a religious event and the individuals who will be present are not being honored. There are a number of non-Catholics that attend. This dinner is not about endorsement, party lines, or determining whether Dolan is “on your side”, it is a cooperative effort to help New York’s poor. You might not agree with Cardinal Dolan’s decision, but please be charitable in your conversations about him. He has proven himself time and again that he is a champion of the Faith in the United States. Respecting his office is of extraordinary importance. He is, after all, a prince of the Church and a successor to the Apostles.

I SURE HOPE THAT YOU ARE NOT STUPID ENOUGH TO BELIEVE THAT OBAMA IS A CHRISTIAN, ARE YOU?????

    • Deacon Ed Peitler

You simply don’t know what you are talking about when you say “this dinner is not a religious event…”  The Al Smith dinner is a fundraiser for the Archdiocesan Catholic Charities.  I guess “Catholic” when it comes to “Catholic Charities” is not religious.

But you might be on to something here when you imply that Catholic Charities organization are not religious since that would be a true statement in my experience with Catholic Charities organizations.  After all, the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Richmond actually escorted and signed permission for a minor under their authority to HAVE AN ABORTION.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and the pictures that will be forthcoming from the Al Smith dinner–namely, Cardinal Dolan laughing it up with Barack Obama–will send the message to Catholics that “all is well.” Make no mistake, these pictures will be plastered in the New York Times, USA Today, and on all the major television networks–and right before the election. Very likely, this will again cause a majority of Catholics to vote for a pro-abortion candidate. All of Cardinal Dolan’s heretofore noble efforts on behalf of the unborn and religious liberty will mean nothing.

Barack Obama is a proven enemy of the Church, yet Cardinal Dolan is going to honor him. Would Cardinal Dolan invite a pro-segregation candidate to the dinner? Would he invite a candidate who supports the murder of the homeless? Ah, but it’s only babies that Obama believes in killing, and to date, only 50 million have been murdered Furthermore, this invitation is a slap in the face of all the Catholics who, at Cardinal Dolan’s urging, prayed and fasted during a Fortnight for Freedom. How can we ever take Cardinal Dolan seriously again? If he doesn’t rescind this invitation, his reputation, like Father Jenkins’, will be forever ruined. Please pray that Cardinal Dolan will rescind the invitation, and also respectfully register your complaints with the USCCB.God help us!

If Cardinal Dolan announces at the dinner to Obama how the Catholic Church intends to expose that the HHS mandate and the February 10, 2012 concession are unconstitutional volations per se, pursuant to my breakthrough in religous freedom at: http://ProlifeTaxStrike.blogspot.com and http://UnbornJustice.blogspot.com  and elsewhere then I dare say that inviting Obama would be worth it. But as of now, he refuses to speak to me because I told him the truth in a letter to him: The Catholic Church pray for life but nonetheless pays for death (e.g., Women’s Wellness Act (N.Y.) in 2007  and the Women’s Contraceptive Act in 2004). However, to the contrary, I know precisely and accurately how to do so but he won’t listen to me! My legal reasoning was coprighted in 2004.

  • Mcnamara5769

There is nothing “upbeat, affirming, positive or joyful” about abortion, same sex marriage and contraception or the destruction of the Unitesd States of America. You will be judged by the company you keep and the allowances you make. Jesus sat with sinners, true, but he didn’t mince words with them, didn’t hob nob with them and didn’t put up with hypocrisy. Nothing screams hypocrisy like saying “we will not comply” and then invite the root of the problem to a party. Ridiculous!

  • http://UnbornJustice.blogspot.com/ Lawrence R. Rosano

Cardinal Dolan made an opportune and ver timely invitation to invite Obama to the Al Smith Dinner in N.Y.C.  yet only if he will use it for the opportunity to announce to him my breakthrough in religious freedom which proves as a matter of law that the HHS mandate and its February 10, 2012 are unconstitutional in violation of the Free Exercise of Religion Clause which prohibits the Government uncondititonally to coerce a religious adherent to consent to an always available temptation to violate religion in practice in order to become eligible to receive benefits or work. In my book ad blogs I prove as a matter of law that for 50 years Sherbert v. Verner, 374 U.S. 398 1963) was based on a judicial lie i.e. a religious error, precisely by erroneously equating (1) a coercion to consent to a temptation to violate religion “in principle only” with (2) a coercion to violate religion in practice and (3) a coercion to consent to a temptation to violate religion in practice. My blogs and book explain all the details in between.

This writer has been critical of the invitation.

However the invitation is extended to both political candidates, which is a long standing tradition.
Obama is simply the poster boy for the racist eugenics movement. He is a tool and must be defeated.  Neither courts nor cardinals are the entire answer.

The people must throw  the Democratic party out. They have become the party of death.

Below is an image of the Holy Father with President Barack Obama. Men of great power must come together occasionally, even if they are at odds, even at war with each other. Dialogue is necessary for conversion. Instances of graciousness and charity are necessary components of the evangelization of men of state and wealth. This dinner is an opportunity to promote Christian charity for the sake of New York’s poor, and implicitly the unborn. Pray for the president, don’t condemn him. Pray for Cardinal Dolan, don’t chastise him.

    • Luke

Birds of the same feather, flock together!

Prayer for the conversion of the current head of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI, who has compromised the Christian faith for going on seven years now.  He is also a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

He has personally supported one of the most reprehensible sins I have ever heard of (which I will not mention here).  He has refused to reign in wicked ecclesiastical leaders, such as Cardinal Dolan, and many other wayward priests and religious.  He has refused to demand that the most abhorrent and vile sexual education programs for children you could ever imagine (supporting the homosexual lifestyle and premarital-sex), unbelievably starting in kindergarten in Catholic schools in the United States and probably other westernized countries, be brought to a swift end.  It turns out the the Vatican actually, at least tacitly, supports these wicked sexual education programs in the United States and Canada.

He, along with Pope John Paul II before him, have allowed the most sexually deviant (by description, blasphemous, false mass, to go on in my diocese for over 20 years now.  I will give you a hint about what kind of false mass it is — the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for far less offenses before God, only because the Catholic Church with its grace did not exist at that time.  I am actually amazed that God has not destroyed the city I live in with a massive earthquake for such vile blasphemy, actually supported by at least two consecutive bishops of my diocese.  I know these blasphemous masses are also going on in some other dioceses throughout the United States, including Cardinal Dolan’s New York diocese.  The list of deviances allowed by the Vatican for decades could go on and on.

Should you leave the Catholic Church under the grave circumstances it has found itself in.  Absolutely not!  There is n0 authority for this option in scripture.  Jesus warned, through his Word that throughout the history of the Church there would be wolves in sheep’s clothing, false prophets, antichrists and many tribulations.  Jesus actually warned in scripture the mystery of iniquity will increase until the day that Jesus returns and warned His followers there would be many tribulations and sufferings for His followers before that great day of judgment came.  He asked that you not lose faith in Him, but to hold onto to Him for dear life when the time of the tribulation comes AND WE ARE IN THE DAYS OF THE GREAT TRIBULATION.

These wicked ecclesiastical leaders of our day are actually judgments on Catholics Christians and all Christians for supporting and engaging in wicked sins and then not repenting of those sins.  The answer to dealing with the current wickedness flooding the Church is to repent of sin and take up your cross and follow Jesus, if necessary, to Calvary.  Just as there was the scandal of Jesus on the cross at Calvary, in our present day, there is the scandal of the Church on its cross in a world of wickedness.  However, just as the devil thought he had prevailed in destroying Jesus on his cross on Calvary, the devil will be on the losing side again when he thinks he has all but destroyed the Catholic Church; his wicked actions will only lead to bringing about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, sooner rather than later, and, ultimately, the complete destruction of all sin and evil forever.

Do not lose your faith in the Catholic Church Jesus instituted for our salvation with its sacramental system, the sacraments being the fuel for our faith.  Obviously, the Catholic Church is following Jesus on the road to Calvary.  If you do not have faith in Jesus Christ – that he died for you personally as God and man on Calvary almost 2000 years ago and that there are Three Persons One God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit — The Holy Trinity), admit you are a sinner and get on your knees and pray that Jesus ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit on you to convict you of these truths.  God will not turn away a repentant sinner!  If you have faith, pray, fast, avoid sin, and take up your cross and follow Jesus — these are the answers to the current scandals seemingly destroying the Catholic Church at its very foundation.

You are attacking the messenger, rather than the truthful message and warning I gave in my comments.

Your comments show that you are in a state of apostasy from the teachings of Christ and, as such, you should have your comments blocked so those who are weak in their faith may not be mislead by you.  Further, your comments show that you consistently support the shepherds of the Church (i.e., Cardinal Dolan and Pope Benedict XVI) hobnobbing with the likes of a mass-murdering fiend, called obama — who is no different than hitler.  You are the like the blind leading the blind with your deceptive comments.  Have you ever heard the phrase; “guilty by association.”

All the comments I have made are absolutely truthful and can be verified by doing the most basic research on the internet.  Cardinal Dolan’s and Pope Benedict’s scandalous conduct is emblematic of the sorry state of the human leadership in the Catholic Church.  Also, you are the one who brought up the scandalous image of Pope Benedict fraternizing with the mass baby murderer obama!

Instead of meeting with these mass-murders of the unborn (like obama), Cardinal Dolan and Pope Benedict should be pleading that the World Court (I know it will never happen), or other international tribunal, have obama (and those politicians like him) tried and convicted of crimes against humanity for killing untold numbers of unborn babies in the United State and abroad through federally funded contraception and abortion programs.

The point of my comment is to show that Cardinal Dolan’s conduct is just a mere reflection of much greater problems destroying the Church from within and from the top down.  I only speak the truth and as Jesus aptly said; “The Truth will set you free.”  Jesus is the Truth and, at the Judgment Seat of GOD, your deceptive lives will no cut-it.   You, and other like you, supporting, and knowingly voting for the likes of the mass murderers Obama and Romney (Romneycare health care program funding mass murder of the unborn in Mass.), should repent of your wicked sins and be saved before it is too late.  Jesus clearly warned that you can only serve one master, not two!  I can only hope and pray you and other like you who deceive, and have been deceived, will in the end choose Jesus as your only true master!

Neither agreeing nor disagreeing with Luke, why should that be blocked?  Because it makes you uncomfortable?   Do you not believe in spiritual warfare?  Do you not believe that people who lead in the church are subjected to temptations and attacks?   If you do not believe that, than how can you call yourself “Catholic”?  For crying out loud every great saint underwent “turmoil” in his or her soul, and that includes Mother Teresa most recently who wrote about her long dark of the soul.  I cannot account for what Luke writes, but in the spirit of liberty, he most certainly has a right to free speech, and that includes speaking his mind on MBs like this one.

Your objection reminds me of the days preceeding WWII.  Many Americans thought the Nazis, national socialists, were harmless, too.  How wrong they were we now understand.  The lesson from that era ought to be we can all be wrong about a great many things and people.  We must evaluate based on actions, not words.

Archbishop Dolan illustrates the reason the Church is losing membership. I am saddened that he runs
away with his tail between his legs out of fear of the the party that long ago abandoned its principals.
Among others his Irish forbearers are disgraced. Al Smith was an Irish politician with backbone. He
too must be ashamed of this sham of a party that has besmirched his legacy !

The church (small c) that does not stand for something will dwindle because it stands for nothing.

I see you deleted my comment…is this just another “catholic” web site run by those who worship at the altar of “political correctness”?  Functioning as thought and word police isn’t one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy but “Admonishing Sinners” is.  It takes moral courage to admonish sinners…I encourage Crisis Magazine to cultivate this virtue…

Unreal! I thought that we were fighting the battle for Religious Liberty not endorsing Obama. Why give Obama a Platform when he is trying to destroy the Church? I don’t understand.

Aug. 8th: Card. Dolan wants to be charitable???  How about being ‘charitable’ to the millions of unborn human babies that Obama wants to be slaughtered in the womb. While Card. Dolan and Obama are laughing and drinking and having a good old time, Obama is aggressively promoting the killing of these babies…and while they are having such a good time, these babies are being slaughtered…sorry, this is beyond belief!!!  Would Card. Dolan have invited Hitler to a party and put on hold the truth of those being slaughtered on Hitler’s order? Well, on Obama’s order, millions and millions of human babies are being slaughtered…and Card. Dolan wants to party with him…it just doesn’t make any sense!

    Cardinal Dolan:  “Cave” man.

  • Angel548

President Obama has shown Cardinal Dolan where he stands by making promises and then reneging on them. The HHS Mandate is very clear. I now want to be very clear in my comments to Cardinal Dolan – DISINVITE PRESIDENT OBAMA. We are the Church Militant and in a battle for our Church, the one instituted by Jesus himself. To some people – Perception is Reality, so sitting down with President Obama gives the impression that it’s OK to vote for the most pro-abortion president in the history of our country who is trying to force the Catholic Church to go against its teachings.

Archbishop, do you think that 30 pieces of silver are more important than doing the right thing? I hope and pray not.

  • Jerseyaud

I was really a supported of dolans not any MORE, I am a very religious Catholic, my church is upsetting me, more and more, Dolan keeps saying the administration it’s OBAMA.
To invite him was a real slap in the face to all Catholics.

Dolan has now jumped the shark. To his troops, all the people that have mustered under him to fight the good fight, hes is now Cardinal Dolemite (Saturday Night Live reference)

  • Leo

As you all pile on Cardinal Dolan please do consider that your hind sight will be better than your prophetic vision. He must invite both or neither candidate to avoid an invented liberal media pout fest. He can, and hopefully will point out that the president has stabbed Catholics in the back with his ignored promises of personal conscience. And he can give an under the table Catholic endorsement of candidate Romney that he otherwise has no opportunity to do. He may not do any of this but as you cast your stones now, you are forgetting to look at the writing in the dust.

    • New Observer

Sorry, Leo.  He (Dolan) would look even more foolish to bait Obama with an invitation and then look like rude baffoon insulting his honored guest at the dinner.  Obama would gain sympathy and while bringing disdain and criticism upon Catholics.  Not a wise hypothesis on your part.  Now, if they want to invite Pelosi, Biden, Durbin, Dodd, Leahy, Cuomo or any of the other dozens of Kennedy’s who claim to be be Catholic to the dinner, at least they could eat their own.

    • givelifeachance2

He could invite neither.  There is no mandate that says that dinner has to happen if the candidates support intrinsic evils.  In fact, he could invite some of the third party candidates who are 100 percent prolife.  How’s that for an idea?

      • Wilson

Excellent idea, like in countries more democratic than the U. S.  that require equal coverage of all established parties.    My party was founded in 1869, but I have not heard one word about it in the “prestige” media.   Of, by, and for the “people”.

Dolan is an idiot and no doubt that slimey Catholic –David Axelrod is dancing for joy.  Dolan is going to cave and lacks integrity just like the entire USCCB.  Jesus engaged Pilot in conversation because Pilot was willing to listen.  Jesus did not bother speaking to convince Caiaphas of anything since he (like Obama) was already a lost cause.

During the Lenten season of my RCIA in 2009,  the parish sponsored different rites of the Church every Wednesday evening.     South East Michigan is known for its Chaldean population and I was curious to attend their mass.    The solemnity of their rite  shamed what occurs at mass in some other parishes.     As with Lent this political season demands  solemnity.    The president and the self-proclaimed Catholics in his administration have openly defied the Constitutional order and the profound moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.  This is no time for jokes; and no time for reaching across the aisle to those who oppose everything we believe as Catholics.    Whatever his eminence’s intentions, he trivializes this moment in American history and the eternal moment of the Church.      This pathetic need that Americans have to be liked will never result in a true right to be born in this country or across the world.      Christ said we would be reviled.    What must be at stake for Cardinal Dolan and other successors to the Apostles to risk the contempt of those for whom the Church is an obstruction to their ambitions to transform us socially, politically, culturally, and morally?

After the Fortnight For Freedom?  What was the point then?  Let us hope he has something up his sleeve.

    • New Observer

Agreed, Kathy.  The Bishops get the faithful in the pews all behind the leadership and we start writing letters to our Congress people and calling their DC offices and then Dolan pulls this stunt.  Dolan has nothing up his sleeve.  He only wants to “make nice” with Obama and tone down the rehetoric.  Is there any wonder why we have such a disconnect between the clergy and those in the pew?  They live in an ecclesiastical world of their own with brother bishops.  An Evangelical Protestant group (ACLJ) has been backing the Catholic church on this issue in court over religious rights.  Now Dolan pulls this stunt.  I am sick of having weak men as Bishops.

      • Kathy

What do we do then?  It would be so easy to give in to despair.

        • New Observer

          Kathy,
Certainly we should all pray that the Lord will replace such weak leadership and rise up new clergy willing to stand for righteousness.  Is it not ironic that none of the Apostles Jesus selected were of retirement age.  Time to think “out of the box.”

  • Collins2345

Al Kresta: The Cardinal is not bound by custom to invite the President. His predecessors, Cardinals O’Connor and Egan did not invite President Clinton or Senator Kerry, respectively. To those who say that the Cardinal is going to engineer some prophetic challenge or “box the President’s ears”, as one email said, let me remind you that no host gets applause for ambushing a guest. Plus, the press doesn’t report subtlety very well. If the Cardinal appears to be a reluctant or chiding host, we lose all the way around. To those who say that the Cardinal is imitating Christ by inviting tax collectors and publicans, I would remind you that this is Democrats and Re-publicans. This isn’t a private dinner to which the marginalized and oppressed are invited thereby scandalizing the powers that be. It is a public dinner to which the rich and powerful are invited thereby scandalizing the thousands of “little people” who have been foot soldiers in this struggle to maintain Catholic identity and religious liberty

  • Matthew Arnold

Lovely article.  It is the essence of the Church that it be with sinners, according to our Pope, and to Jesus Christ, and I trust that this is the purpose of the invitation.  Cardinal Dolan is brave to be doing this, and I pray that his plans to convert the President succeed.  I understand that feelings run high about this President–I have absolutely no respect for him either–but that is not the problem.  As for the Hitler analogy, that is illogical: Pope Pius XII DID deal with the brute bastard diplomatically.  Why should Cardinal Dolan do anything less?  If you do not think you as Catholics should mix with sinners, become high church Anglican.

    • givelifeachance2

Pius XII did not invite Hitler to a yuck-it-up dinner.  It is very possible that Obama got elected, with great numbers of Catholics voting for him, because of the honoring of him at the 2008 Al Smith dinner.  Is that after-the-fact enough for you?

      • Matthew Arnold

Rank speculation.  “Is that after-the-fact enough for you?”  Put your thinking cap on.  You say nothing to the point.

  • Jay E.

I stand with Cardinal Dolan on this. This is NOT “another Notre Dame experience” and to suggest that Cardinal Dolan is in anyway condoning the actions of President Obama is beyond ludicrous. I think this is a wise move. I think the damage being done is not from Cardinal Dolan but from many narrow critics of Dolan who are undermining the unity we had just achieved in the last 7 months. Cardinal Dolan is not betraying anybody.

    • Deacon Ed Peitler

The Cardinal should ask Doug Kmiec to give the keynote speech.

      • Matthew Arnold

It is in no way the place of Catholics criticize the prelature in public, least of all before the fact.  Catholics are indeed bound by Canon Law NOT to do so ordinarily.  Please do not get carried away by the power to post online.  Please avoid creating scandal.

        • Deacon Ed Peitler

Please cite the Code of Caon Law that criticism is wrong.  It is wrong to publicly say that what a bishop teaches on matters of faith and morals is in error, or that the bishop in his governance authority should not be obeyed.

But this is a matter of prudential judgement about whether it is advisable, given the most recent persecution of the Church and infringement on religious freedom by this Obama administration, for the Cardinal to invite the president to the Al Smith Dinner.  There is recent past precedent for NOT doing so.  In the very least, the invitation sends conflicting signals to the laity who are already confused about Church teachings on matters such as contraception, homosexual “marriage,” abortion, etc, etc.

          • Matthew Arnold

No, thanks: it’s online.  As a Deacon, you can easily do your own homework.  I am extremely distressed that you would consider this a matter of prudential judgment, when you have NO RIGHT TO JUDGE THE CARDINAL AT ALL.  You are judging the Cardinal a. before the fact and b. out of sight.  Equally, you are causing scandal and leading Catholics astray.  I think you should apologize.

            • Deacon Ed Peitler

              My last response to you.

If you make an assertion about Canon Law, you should be able to cite your reference.

As far as not judging the Cardinal, no one is above having their actions reviewed in matters such as this.  Again, I am not referring to matters having to do with the bishop’s munera to govern, teach and sanctify.  That is his rightful purview.  We are talking about a public social event that affects the Church and the perception left when the Cardinal fetes Obama in an environment likely to be construed as lending his support to someone who has undermined the Church and our freedom of religion.  It also is likely to cause confusion in the minds of already-confused Catholics about essential Church teachings.

              You get the last word…adieu.

              • Matthew Arnold

If you are ignorant of Canon Law, Deacon, feel free to say so.  You would not be alone.  I do not see either why you cannot see your gross mistakes here or what guides you in your public criticism of an event which has yet to occur, but it is not, so far as I can tell, the one true faith: you claim “As far as not judging the Cardinal, no one is above having their actions reviewed in matters such as this.”  Says who?  By what authority?  Do you speak out against your Bishop in public?

As for the rest of you Catholics, get a civil tongue and stop your sanctimonious aspersions against a Cardinal.  You are just amplifying a scandal of your own making.  The article itself is balanced and articulate.  What shame you bring upon yourselves and this site.

A wise move? How so?  Obama attacks the church’s  teachings but  some how we can forget that for one night and exchange jokes and drinks?  There are priests ready to go to jail rather than obey Obama’s dictatorial mandate!  Whatever Dolan’s motives are, the mere perception of Dolan and Obama exchanging drinks and jokes at a dinner, is for politicians not leaders of the church!

Cardinal Dolan has absolutely no excuse not to be aware of the Pope’s statements against Obama for enacting anti-Catholic laws.

I  attended a religious rally a couple of months ago, and Catholics and non Catholics alike were united against this mandate pursued by Obama!  We all felt that this mandate was just the beginning of the assault on the church and it’s teachings.  Cardinal Dolan, by his invitation is  playing down the  seriousness of Obama’s attack on religious freedom. He is kicking the legs right out of his fellow Catholics and supporters! Are all these Bishops and Cardinals becoming politicians?

When Christ said Love your enemies, by Love, he meant desiring Salvation for them. The only way to Salvation, is through communion with The Word of God, Who defines Love.

“Love one another as I have Loved you.” – Jesus The Christ

The line has been drawn in the Sand between those who believe that from The Beginning, every human individual ( definition of person) from the moment of their conception, has been created in The Image of God, equal in Dignity, while being complementary as male and female, to live in Loving relationship as husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters…and those who believe we were created as an object of sexual desire, heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, polysexual, transexual…in direct violation of God’s own Commandment regarding lust and the sin of adultery. Those who walk in The Spirit of Love choose Life, and desire Salvation for their beloved.

Aug. 11th: I hear that Card. Dolan will not back down, that he wants Obama at this Catholic event.  We must remember that, at a certain point, babies in the womb feel the pain of the abortionist’s knife as he dismembers their tiny bodies. A video from inside a woman’s womb showed the preborn infant trying hard to back away from the knife that would cut him to pieces.  How can Card. Dolan take a time out from that in order to party with power, with Obama, the architect of death.  What if Hitler had agreed to take a time out from the politics of death and destruction, would Card. Dolan have sat down with Hitler to party and drink and laugh and have a jolly old time.  Card. Dolan is not putting politics aside, he is closing his ears to the cry of the unborn who are being slaughtered viciously while the good Cardinal parties with the promoter of the deaths of these little ones.  He is honoring the very man who promotes death and destruction, who is leading the charge of persecution of the Church.  There is absolutely no excuse for the Cardinal to do this…unless he is putting a desire to hobnob with power and fame above the sufferings of the unborn and the persecution of the Catholic Church.

A political party has declared war on our Church and the Archbishop wants to yuk it up with the party’s leader two weeks before the election, at best ,sends a mixed message.  I guess it’s a real possibility the  Archbishop will vote for the President again this time.

  • Southside Louie

    Good luck.
Obama is already running with this as an “honor ” accorded him by the Catholic Church. If Cardinal Dolan thinks, having thrown open the window, he can have any control over this wind, he is  too naive to be an effective leader against a determined adversary.

“The end result may teach Americans a significant lesson just before the presidential election.”
I will Pray that that lesson will be, that since it is a self-evident truth that God Has endowed us with our unalienable Rights , then the purpose of our unalienable Rights, is what God intended.

  • John O’Neill

The American Catholic bishops especially those who come from an Irish background cannot seem to free themselves of the Democrat party.  From the time of Cardinal Cushing, the personal Cardinal Richlieu to the Kennedy family, the American heirarchy has lashed itself to the American political system especially the Democrat party. I am old enough to remember the time when the typical Irish Democrat family had three pictures above their fireplaces, one was the Sacred Heart, the second Pope John XXIII, the the last a picture of John Kennedy, and times have not changed much videlicet Notre Dame University. Time to separate from the American political system in toto; it is outrageous that this year the number of American govenment enabled abortions has passed the fifty million mark and American Catholics can still pledge allegiance to this horrible socio-political system.  Remember the funeral mass for Edward Kennedy, the leader of the American abortion party, when the cardinal bishop of Boston held this man up as a saint.  Time for  Catholics to seek leadership and teaching authority elsewhere.  Dolan is a prisoner of his ethnic heritage.

    • givelifeachance2

It goes back even farther to the potato famine immigrants and then the NY City draft riots against the Civil War and the Republicans.  My ancestors, and they had a blind spot against abolition.  Perhaps because they were discriminated against by the Know-Nothing’s but that’s no reason to ignore the vital human rights abuse of slavery.

      • Wilson

There was no famine in Ireland.  Aside from the spoiled potato crops, agricultural production was unaffected, exported to England and Scotland.  What happened was forced starvation of the masses [Catholics], genocide, who subsisted off of potatoes.  Please see http://www.irishholocaust.org for a correct explanation of terminology and an expose of the over-all horror.
An aside: Not one member of the Irish Catholic hierarchy died from the starvation.

    • Wilson

I agree with Mr. O’Neill about the negative influence of Irish clergymen on the over-all well-being of Catholicism in the United States.   It was they who caused His Holiness Pope Leo 13th to feel compelled to proclaim his denunciation of their “Americanism”.  The German hierarchy and others fought them, but lost in the greater fight.
The essence of most of the Irish has been an “inferiority complex” in relation to the old WASP elite [now flooded with Jews] –  “Oh, Massah, please accept me.  See, I am a perfect little all-American boy [girl].  See, only a few of us are not Democrats.  See, we will someday get rid of that foreign Latin in the Mass, etc.  Please accept me, oh please.”   They got their vengeance against the Catholics who opposed them with their Second Vatican Council.
Well, this little submissive-to-your-betters game has run its course now, with the first salvo of the war that is underway by the snakes who hate the true Church and the true Faith — fronted by the Luciferian devil now occupying the White House.
So, the Irish Rev. Dolan appears to be in a dream world, unable to grasp that the enemies whom he thought his friends now feel strong enough to at last officially persecute us.   Los sueños, sueños son, Pater.  They have declared the war.
Should anyone care to accuse me of “anti-Irishim”, my Father was 100 percent proved Irish blood [Galway/Cashel] and my Mother had a large dose of it.   Neither my Father nor his Father ever voted for a Democrat.

  • Deacon Ed Peitler

I find it interesting that among those who are so willing to give Dolan a pass on the Al Smith Dinner invitation, they hearken back to the scriptures and the fact that Christ would not hesitate to sit down to a meal with sinners – the implication being that Obama is a sinner and so Christ would want to effect a change of heart in the person.

Now I have no qualms at all about the reference to Obama being a sinner.  Anyone who advocates that it is morally right to take a full term otherwise-healthy baby, allow its head to emerge from the birth canal and then proceed to use sharp scissors to pierce the base of its skull  to make a hole in its cranium in order to insert a tube used to suck its brains out is indeed a sinner.

But there are other people in the scriptures whom the Lord loudly denounces and whom he chooses not to sit and eat a meal with – those who are rich, powerful and who lord it over others.  Those who cause harm to small children and he says should have a millstone tied around their neck and thrown into the abyss. Obama also fits into these categories.  This is a man who lords it over others and uses his power to do so.  He tramples on the religious rights of others and rather than working to solve the economic miseries his policies has caused, has managed to take in more than 40 rounds of golf in the past 4 years and innumerable vacations.  Among the millions of people his policies have put out of work and have had their houses foreclosed on and who have had to declare bankruptcy, how many have played 40 rounds of golf?  No, Christ did not hob-nob with the powerful who lord it over the weak and vulnerable, the poor and the children.  He rightfully condemned them.  And this, our dear Cardinal just doesn’t get.

  • Clement_W

A note of caution, ladies and gentleme. Please read 1 Samuel Chapter 8 and in the what I have heard some have said ‘Look through the retrospectoscope’. I have not come across this particular part of the scripture on the days I have been to Mass and when I read it accidentally I must admit, the applicability of this short part of Old Testament scripture to all of history and particularly to the quandary that Cardinal Dolan along with the American Catholic Church AND Western Society finds itself in today.

I suppose the Al Smith Dinner will be as good a place as any to remind all those prodigal sons and daughters, who are in His Church physically, but have left Christ’s Church spiritually, having created a god in their own image, through the sin of pride, which has been in this world from the beginning, causing chaos and confusion, that we are living in the Time of The Great Apostasy, that for a time has fooled many of the elect, but many have awoken, and are no longer sleeping in Gethsemane and are ready to prepare, The Way Of The Lord.
