Gabriel,
That's exactly the point; "human devleopment" is intended to connote whatever you want it to. This means that you can ask Catholics slobs in the pews to contribute to the support of the poor and then give the money as a grant to ACORN for politiking for Obama and other socialists.

I wish I recorded and could quote verbatim my conversation with members of ACORN who applied for a CCHD grant and whom I interviewed personally when I was the director of my diocese's Catholic Charities and in a position to recommend to my bishop at the time whether to approve their $50,000 grant request(I did not).

I actually had fun at this person's expense discussing free market economics and approaches to lifting people out of poverty other than socialism. This ACORN woman was actually flabergasted that there was anything other than socialism. Sadly, she was not aware that I could see through this whole CCHD/ ACORN scheme as an attempt to use the plight of the poor to keep themselves employed by the "poverty industry."

But worse than this, when I had the same discussion with the CCHD point person at the USCCB on this grant, she was stunned that I turned down the ACORN grant request telling me that no one else IN ANY OTHER DIOCESE had ever turned down an ACORN request. No longer working for my diocese, I consider not recommending this CCHD/ACORN grant request as the pinnacle of my short diocesan career.

There seems to be some denseness ob the part of critics of the USCCB and the CCHD. That is, that bishops never lie. They are human like the rest of us; and lazy like the rest of us. They prefer not to face up to the problems of being a bishop, which chiefly consist in fighting the good fight against Satan.

[A side question: what exactly - the Church always loves exactness - is meant by "Human Development"? Sounds like some Socialist propaganda; which should not surprise us, coming, as it does, from the bureaucracy of the USCCB].

Sorry. I misread your question. No one outside USCCB seems to know how much they collect.

Yes, statistics are available. In percentage terms, problematic grants have actually increased since last year's "reform" document was published by the bishops.

Want the craziness at CCHD to stop? Serious about that?

Then here's what I suggest...drop a note to the bishop of your diocese and tell him that because CCHD is such a worthy cause, you have decided to take the $5000 you usually contribute to your parish and to other diocesan campaigns and will now, instead, write a check to CCHD.

That will get your bishop's attention you can be certain of that! (of course, you won't have any intention of sending one red cent to CCHD).

Stephanie Block was right on when she named this systemically-corrupt Bishop's collection a "money laundering scheme" mostly benefitting the corrupt
pro-abort Democratic Party and leftist groups. I believe we have to come up with something more drastic than a boycott to get through to the Bishops. How about
a "Occupy the USCCB" demonstration - or a class-action suit? What was done here is just as blatantly criminal as any Wall Street debacle. We are talking about over 25 million dollars coming from the pockets of gullible and kind hearted donors - in the guise of "helping the poor!" Shame, shame on all who pulled another one over on us. How much more can we take, Lord? It's got to stop...NOW!

The philosophy behind CCHD is flawed. Why should Catholics support secular groups in the first place? One of the best ways to help the poor is education, but inner city Catholic schools are closing right and left. How about pouring those millions into schools that educate the children of the poor? Or how about a Catholic group that does job training (Remember John Bosco?) That the Church is supporting all these community organizing groups is ridiculous! Visit www.catholicmediacoalition.org for many articles on the CCHD scandal.

The bishops will get the message when CCHD collection shrinks as a result of laypeople directing their support away from the CCHD to local charities which do the right thing.
